Dr. Irena Zdovc, Assist. Prof., graduated in 1987 at the Veterinary Faculty, University of Ljubljana. After five years of working in the regional laboratory, she started with the postgraduate studies in the field of veterinary clinical microbiology. For her MSc degree, she studied bacteria of the genus Staphylococcus from the canine skin and their susceptibility to antibiotics and chemotherapeutics. She continued her studies in the field of mycology and was awarded with PhD degree in 1997 for her thesis entitled “Properties of dermatophytes isolated from dogs and cats in Slovenia according to cytoplasmic proteins”. Since 1997, she is permanently employed at the Veterinary Faculty of Ljubljana, Institute of Microbiology and Parasitology. She is managing the Bacteriology and Mycology Unit of the National Veterinary Institute and is held responsible for the National Reference Laboratory (NRL) for Listeria monocytogenes and NRL for the Antibiotic Resistance.Her research interest is focused on the animal bacterial diseases, especially of the pet animals. She participates at the practical courses for the graduate students in the scope of the subject “Microbiology and Immunology (Specific Microbiology and Veterinary Sanitary Microbiology)”. She gives lectures on diagnostics of bacterial and fungal diseases and participates in the scope of an elective subject “Microbiological Practicum with Diagnostics of the Especially Resistant Bacteria (MRSA, ESBL, carbapenemase producing bacteria)”. She is supervising students in their research work (Preseren awards) and high school students of the Biotechnical Education Centre. She is also supervising or co-supervising MSc and PhD students.

Her teaching and clinical service responsibilities focus on the diagnostics of bacterial and fungal infections in different domestic animals. Her research interests include both clinical investigation and microbiological examinations, with special interest of susceptibility testing.

Irena Zdovc is involved as a team leader or partner of several national research projects and international bilateral projects. In the last five years she has cooperated at several projects and in the program group (Animal Health, Environment and Food Safety).

She is the author of several scientific papers and abstracts, and is giving presentations at different scientific meetings. She is a member of the Slovenian Society of Small Animals, the Slovenian Veterinary Chamber and the Slovenian Microbiological Society.
