Harald Pichler

Dr. Harald Pichler obtained his PhD from Graz University of Technology for research on lipid synthesis and transport in yeast under the guidance of Guenther Daum.

Supported by a Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) long-term fellowship, he undertook postdoctoral studies with Howard Riezman at both the Biozentrum of the University of Basel and the University of Geneva dealing with the roles of sterols in endocytosis.

Returning to Graz University of Technology he joined the Institute of Molecular Biotechnology headed by Helmut Schwab and extended his research interests to recombinant protein expression and enzyme engineering in bacteria and yeasts.

In 2009, he has been offered a tenure-track position at Graz University of Technology and has been establishing a research team working on the biotechnology of cellular membranes since.

Focus of current work is on protein secretion from the yeast Pichia pastoris, on membrane protein expression and function, and on biosynthesis and bioconversion of hydrophobic compounds.
