Tamara Smokvina

Dr. Tamara Smokvina is a microbial geneticist working as a senior scientist in Danone Research, the R&D of Danone Group, a world leader in fermented dairy products.

Her expertise centers around genetics, genomics and physiology of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) with the special interest on the interaction of those bacteria with intestinal mammalian cells and gut microbiota.

In her recent work, Tamara Smokvina focused on the molecular analysis of bacterial mechanisms involved in the communication between particular LAB strains, exerting probiotic effects, and the host mucosa.

Her everyday work consists in leading scientific projects and collaborations with academic laboratories, supervising PhD students and translating scientific achievements into industrial valorization and application.
