University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark

Professor at the University of Copenhagen. He completed his PhD in microbiology at the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University in Denmark in 2000 and became ‘de facto’ diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Public Health (ECVPH) in 2005. He is a One Health microbiologist specialised in antibiotic resistance and antibiotic therapy. His research has contributed to a better understanding of the origin, evolution and transmission of resistant bacteria and resistance genes of clinical relevance, and in recent years has focused on the development of new therapeutic and diagnostic solutions for defeating multidrug-resistance in human and veterinary pathogens, leading to over 150 peer-reviewed articles (H-index 41). He actively promotes antimicrobial stewardship in veterinary medicine through teaching at both graduate and postgraduate levels, and development of clinical practice guidelines on antibiotic use. Among his honorary offices, he is founder and chair of the ESCMID (European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases) Study Group of Veterinary Microbiology (ESGVM), founder and member of the Veterinary Committee for Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (VetCAST), and member of the One Health Committee of the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA).
