  • 1974 PhD in Microbiology from the University of London
  • 1974 – 1977 Junior Lecturer at the University of London
  • 1977 – 1988 Lecturer in Microbiology in the Medical School, University of Edinburgh.
  • 1988 – 1992 Reader
  • 1992 – present Professor of Microbial Chemotherapy in the Medical School, University of Edinburgh.
  • 1997 – 2001 Head of Medical Microbiology department, Medical School, University of Edinburgh.
  • 1985 Winner of the annual Young Scientist prize of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society
  • 1988 Winner of the annual C.L. Oakley Lectureship of the Pathological Society
  • 1988 DSc in Microbiology from the University of London
  • 1995 Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists
  • 1999 Visiting Professor of the University of Concepcion in Chile.

He has obtained 56 research grants, published more than 490 original papers and refereed conference communications, supervised 44 PhD students, all of whom have successfully obtained their doctorates.
