Martin Hoenigl, MD, Univ.-Prof., Priv.-Doz., FECMM, is a physician–scientist specializing in clinical mycology, virology, and infectious diseases. He currently serves as Tenured Professor for Translational Mycology at the Division of Infectious Diseases, Medical University of Graz, Austria. His career includes key academic roles at the University of California San Diego, where he progressed from postdoctoral fellow to Assistant Professor and later Associate Adjunct Professor of Medicine. He has authored more than 350 PubMed‑listed publications, including high‑impact work in Lancet Infectious Diseases, Lancet Microbe, Clinical Infectious Diseases, and Nature Microbiology. His contributions have earned numerous international awards, including the ID Week Diagnostic Award (2018), the Ira F. Salkin Award (2018), and multiple distinctions from the American Society for Microbiology.
Hoenigl has held major leadership roles within international medical mycology organizations, including serving as President of the European Confederation of Medical Mycology (2017–2023) and, since 2023, its Clinical Study Director. He is Associate Editor for Mycopathologia, OFID, and Mycoses, and serves on scientific committees for leading global infectious disease conferences. Throughout his academic career, he has supervised numerous diploma, doctoral, and postdoctoral researchers across Graz and UC San Diego, contributing significantly to training the next generation of infectious disease specialists.
