Report of the Fifth summer school in Applied Molecular Microbiology

Summer schools in Applied Molecular Microbiology were founded to recognise the development of interest in microbial metabolites, coupled with the need for new antibiotics resulting from the rise in antibiotic resistant pathogens.

The 2014 summer school entitled “Microbial Specialised Metabolites: Origins and Applications” was held at the IUC, Dubrovnik. It was organized by John Innes Center (UK) and Ruđer Bošković Institute (Croatia), while FEMS and CMS sponsored the event. The co-directors of the course were David Hopwood and Mervyn Bibb (John Innes Centre), Julian Davies (University of British Columbia) and Duška Vujaklija (Ruđer Bošković Institute). Beside helping in the organization of many School events Duška, the president of the Section for Bacteriology and an active CMS member, was teaching and also contributing to the small-group discussions along with the other faculty members.
