The Agar Art Contest requires contestants to create a picture in a petri dish using microbes as paint. There were 85 entrants this year and the results were pretty amazing. The image above is called ‘Cell to Cell’ and was the people’s choice award with over 3,500 likes in the Facebook album.

Pandoravirusi – otkriće najvećih i najneobičnijih virusa do sada
Skupina francuskih i švedskih znanstvenika koju su vodili Chantal Abergel i Jean-Michel Claverie, otkrivač dosad najvećih i najkompleksnijih Mimi i Megavirusa, objavila je prošli tjedan u časopisu Science (Philipp et al., 2013, Science 341 (6143): 281-286.) otkriće novog roda Pandoravirus. Kao i prethodno otkriveni virusi orijaške kategorije koji parazitiraju u amebama i ovi imaju vrlo kompleksne genome koji nadilaze po veličini one parazitskih bakterija.
Scientists combine bird and swine flus to create mutant airborne virus
Researchers in China have created a batch of designer viruses by selectively combining genes from the H5N1 bird flu virus with those of the H1N1 swine flu strain. This reassortment process — which can happen naturally in nature — resulted in several hybridized strains that were able spread through the air and infect mammals.
