Maja Ravnikar, Slovenia

Prof. Dr. Maja Ravnikar is the Head of the Department of Biotechnology and Systems Biology at the National Institute of Biology (NIB), Slovenia.

Her main expertise is the study of host-pathogen interaction, development of novel diagnostic methods for detection of pathogens (viruses, bacteria) and innovative approaches for purification of viruses and other biotechnological applications.

She leads authorized diagnostic laboratory for determination of microorganisms for the Phytosanitary Administration and cooperates with many companies.

She is a member of national and international plant protection advisory bodies and expert groups such as Panel on diagnostics and quality assurance in the frame of EPPO (European Plant Protection Organisation), International working group of viruses in vegetables steering committee and PVY Wide Organization, member of the scientific board of the Center for Functional Genomics and Bio-Chips (CFGBC).

She has participated in EU projects: TRANSVIR (2003-2006), PORTCHECK (2004-2007), COEXTRA (2005 – 2009) PEPEIRA (2008 – 2010), QBOL (2009-2012), Q-Detect (2009-2013), Vitisens (2011-2013), INTERFACES (2013 – 2016) and many ERA NET projects, COST actions and bilateral projects.

She was awarded for scientific achievements from American Microbiology Society association with Morrison Rugosa award, National Institute of Biology award, different societies and gained Republic Slovenia award for scientific achievements. Her bibliography includes 145 scientific articles and 12 book chapters, mentorship of 17 doctorates and 6 Master thesis.
