Zeynep Çiğdem Kayacan

Zeynep Çiğdem Kayacan was born in Istanbul, Turkey in 1957. Graduated from Istanbul University, Istanbul Faculty of Medicine in 1982. Worked as general practitioner for two years for compulsory service, and as an office MD afterwards. Became specialist in Medical Microbiology in 1993, associate professor in 1995, professor in 2001 in Istanbul University, Istanbul Faculty of Medicine. Worked as Faculty Executive Board Member in 2003-2006 and is still academic staff at Istanbul Faculty of Medicine, at Department of Medical Microbiology. Was charged in Istanbul University as Vice Rector for International Relations and Education for the January 2009-January 2013 period; and as Advisor to the Rector for International Relations for 2013-2015 period.

Worked on antimicrobial resistance in Ludwig Maximilians University Max von Pettenkofer Institute for Hygiene and Medical Microbiology in Munich, Germany, for several periods between 1992-1995 with scholarships of Federation of European Microbiological Societies (FEMS) and Friedrich Bauer Foundation. Focus of interest in antibiotic resistance, intensive care infections and posttransplant infections. Author or co-author of 70 international and national manuscripts, 10 national book chapters; speaker of 80 presentations and conferences; edited or translated 10 books.

Executive Board member and Secretary General of European Society of Chemotherapy-Infectious Diseases (ESCID) in 1999-2003, Executive Board member of Turkish Society of Microbiology in 2004-2008 and of Turkish Specialist Society of Clinical Microbiology in 2009-2011. Current President of the Turkish Society of Microbiology since 2014; and member of Turkish Specialist Society of Clinical Microbiology, Turkish Society for Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases, Istanbul Medical Chamber, European Society for Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases (ESCMID), and of the Turkish Working Group on Standardization of Antibiotic Susceptibility Tests.
