After 22 months of various and intensive activities, the service learning project „In the society of microbes“ has ended on January 18, 2020.
Microseum (a virtual museum of microbes)

One of the outcomes of the service learning project „In the society of microbes“ is Microseum (a virtual museum of microbes).
Students held nine workshops
December 9, 2019
Students presented some of the basics of microbiology to the children, as well as everyday dangers and benefits linked to microbes, in age appropriate ways (e. g. through playing games, drawing, using instruments like a microscope).
Popular-scientific lectures on microbes held
October 2-5, 2019
Within the project of the Croatian Microbiological Society titled “In the Society of Microbes”, which is carried out in cooperation with partners from the academic community and NGO partners, BIOTEKA and BIUS the series of popular scientific lectures on microbiology for the general public were organised.
We held another educational workshop
June 15, 2019.
On Saturday, 15 June 2019, two educational workshops of the project “In the Society of Microbes” entitled as „Workshop on improving the communication and presentation skills of students“ were held in the premises of the University of Applied Sciences Baltazar.

On Friday, May 17, 2019, a panel entitled „Competition, Collaboration and Teamwork in Academic-Industry Partnerships: Climbing a Mountain or Smooth-Sailing Journey?“ was held on which the project “In the Society of Microbes” was presented. The panel was held within the symposium „Power of microbes in Industry and Environment 2019“ in Sveti Martin na Muri (May 15-18, 2019). This is the 6th symposium which is organised by Croatian Microbiological Society until now.
We held an educational workshop

The educational workshop of the project “In the Society of Microbes” was held on Friday, March 29, 2019, at the Department of Biology (Faculty of Science, Zagreb). Although the primary target group of the workshop were students participating in the project, it was also useful for mentors, educators and project volunteers.

The CMS is a member of FEMS, the organization fostering collaboration amongst European microbiological societies. FEMS periodically issues an Education Bulletin where one can find information about projects and best educational practices within this large microbiological community. n December 13, 2018, within the “The Days of the Faculty”, the Institute of Microbiology and Parasitology of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Rijeka organized a conference “In the Society of Microbes” on the occasion of its 60th anniversary.
Presentation of the project at the scientific symposium
September 20, 2018
The project “In the Society of Microbes”, as well as the concept of service learning, was presented at the round table “Service Learning in Microbiology”. The round table was held on Thursday, September 20th, 2018 in Sveti Martin na Muri, within the programme of the 6th Central European Symposium on Antimicrobials and Antimicrobial Resistance, CESAR 2018. This scientific meeting, organized by Croatian Microbiological Society, traditionally brings together experts in the field of antimicrobial resistance.
Study trip to Amsterdam (the Netherlands)

As part of the project “In the Society of Microbes”, co-funded by the European Social Fund, which is carried out by the Croatian Microbiological Society (CMS) in partnership with three constituent faculties of the University of Zagreb (Faculty of Science, Faculty of Food Technology and Biotechnology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine), Faculty of Medicine (University of Rijeka), the Croatian Catholic University, and BIUS and Bioteka (NGOs); a study trip to Amsterdam (Netherlands) was organized on August 27-29, 2018.
Third education workshop
July 4, 2018
Emma Clayton (Frontiers for Young Minds editor) held a workshop on science communication for children and general public. In the second part of the workshop, Sanja Lepur (Virtualna tvornica) introduced us to the presentation of scientific themes on the web and gave us guidelines on how to prepare the material for interactive web page.
Second education workshop
June 14, 2018
The education workshop on lessons planning and supervised service learning programmes planning was led by prof. Ines Radanović, PhD. Education was conducted as a workshop during which participants learned about types of learning, the concept of knowledge transfer and grading students.
First education workshop
May 21-22, 2018
At the first education, workshop prof. Nives Mikelić Preradović, PhD, gave an introduction to service learning programme and inclusion of the service learning into the academia. Project participants, divided into groups, went through quick design of their own project/syllabus and each group had to present its idea.
Kick off meeting „In the Society of Microbes “

Meeting was held at the Faculty of Food Technology and Biotechnology with the project administration as the main topic. The aim of this meeting was to clarify the obligations of the project participants.
Contract awarding

After Vesna Lendić Kasalo, Cvjetana Plavša-Matić and Marko Pavić`s introduction speeches, all projects were briefly presented and followed by ceremonial contract awarding.
